Service Unit 72 invites all troops to participate!
Education opens doors for all girls & boys...
World Thinking Day, known affectionately as International Friendship Day to many of us past Girl Scouts, is an opportunity for all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world to develop an understanding about sister scouts worldwide, their countries and their cultures. In Hillsborough, we will celebrate World Thinking Day on Friday, February 28, 2014. Each participating troop will select a country to represent. A list of countries that have Girl Guides or Girl Scouts can be found on the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts web site, WAGGGS.org or in all Level training manuals. The troop will then plan a table-top exhibit about their country using a tri-fold display or poster board (which can be purchased at the Dollar Store). We will provide you a list of 10 questions to help guide the girls while creating the display. Troops can also make a swap or a small craft to represent the country to distribute to participants visiting their display. Cold food samples and music are optional at each station. Some troops may even decide to dress like citizens or scouts from their country or perform traditional dances, etc.
On the day of the event, February 28, participants travel from country to country to read exhibits, sample food and perhaps make a small craft or get a SWAP (Some kind of Whatchamacallit Affectionately Pinned.) Travelers will also carry a passport that will be stamped at each station once they have answered a question asked by the troop representing that country (stickers used to mark the passports will be provided). Once the participants have completed their passport (visited every country on display), they can collect a handmade bookmark as a token for their accomplishments.
The Theme of World Thinking Day 2014 is education. Therefore, we will be collecting new or gently used books to be donated to Jersey Cares and the Salvation Army which will be distributed to those less fortunate. Remember to record 15 minutes of service time for your donation.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact Andrea Bongiovanni at email@example.com or Jen Cridge at firstname.lastname@example.org. We are looking forward to a wonderful event that will allow the girls to appreciate and learn about the similarities and differences of their sister scouts around the world. Registration form can be found within Calendar - Feb 28, 2014. Registration closes Jan 31.
